TMA introduces new leaders

The Texas Medical Association, the largest state medical society in the nation, represents nearly 44,000 physician and medical student members. At TexMed 2009, its annual meeting, it also introduced new leaders.

Dr. William H. Fleming III, a Houston neurologist, was elected as the associationÂ’s 144th president. Fleming, also the TMAÂ’s first African-American president, is a clinical assistant professor of neurology at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and serves on boards for Memorial Hermann Healthnet Providers, the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, and the American Heart Association. He also served as president of the Federation of State Medical Boards, which is based in the Metroplex.

Dr. Susan Rudd Bailey, a Fort Worth allergist, was elected president-elect for the TMA. Bailey will go on to become the associationÂ’s 145th president after her one-year fulfillment of this role.

Bailey is in private practice at Fort Worth Allergy and Asthma Associates. Board certified in allergy, asthma, immunology and pediatrics, she has been active in TMA for years.

Currently, Bailey is chair-elect for the AMA Council on Medical Education, which came after being elected to the council in 2004. She is an AMA representative to the Assembly of the American Board of Medical Specialties and on the board of director of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

Locally, Bailey has been active with the Tarrant County Medical Society for 20 years, including serving as president and chair of the board of trustees.

Also from Tarrant County, Doris Johnson, a social worker and volunteer, was named president-elect for the Texas Medical Association Alliance, the volunteer service organization of TMA physicians and physiciansÂ’ spouses.

Johnson is married to Fort Worth gastroenterologist Dr. Donald R. Johnson, and she has been a part of the Tarrant County Medical Society Alliance and similar organizations in the past.

Johnson became involved with the TCMSA more than 25 years ago and served as that groupÂ’s president from 2003 to 2004. Since 2001, Johnson has been active with the TMAA.

After JohnsonÂ’s year as president-elect of the TMAA, she will replace DÂ’Anna Wick of Tyler, a nurse who has been active with the TMAA for almost two decades who was named the 92nd president of the TMAA.
