CousinÂ’s named a top U.S. barbecue
joint by ‘Good Morning America’

A cast member of ABC-TVÂ’s Good Morning America will stop by CousinÂ’s BAR-B-QÂ’s Bryant Irvin Road location during lunch hours May 18 to announce that the quarter-century-old restaurant chain has been named one of the top four barbecue joints in the country.

Ron Claiborne, an anchor for the show, joins Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief and CousinÂ’s founder Calvin Payne III, CEO Jeff Payne and Pit Master Cliff Payne. The news-and-talk show is filming scenes for the Good Morning America Best Barbecue Challenge. CousinÂ’s is the only Texas restaurant among the four finalists.

The segment will air May 23, followed by a 24-hour, online ballot to help crown the champion barbecue joint nationwide.

Calvin Payne III founded the restaurant on McCart Avenue in far south Fort Worth after working under the tutelage of Walter Jetton, the famed Texas barbecue master who cooked for President Lyndon B. Johnson. Calvin PayneÂ’s son, Jeff Payne, currently oversees the Fort Worth-based company, which has six metro-area locations.
