Fort Worth physician honored for family medicine research
Dr. Linda Siy of Fort Worth was named the Philanthropist of the Year by the Texas Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, an award started in 1995 to recognize doctors who have made significant impact toward supporting family medicine research and future family physicians.
Siy, who practices at the JPS Health Center-Northeast in Bedford, is an assistant professor in the department of family and community medicine at the UNT Health Science Center and a clinical associate professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
She has also been a longtime member of the TAFP Foundation Board of Trustees and has started a family medicine research fund to support the foundationÂ’s research grants. She is a donor to the TAFP Foundation and has served in various positions within the organization, including as president and vice-president and president of the local TAFP Tarrant County Chapter.
Nationally, Siy is an alternate delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians and is involved with various other organizations. She was recognized during TAFPÂ’s 60th Annual Session and Scientific Assembly, which was in Arlington on July 25.
Area hospitals honored
Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine, Methodist Mansfield Medical Center, and nine hospitals within Texas Health Resources were each designated a 2010 Texas Ten Step Facility by the Department of State Health Services and the Texas Hospital Association, recognizing the hospitalsÂ’ efforts to support breastfeeding.
Both institutions have 10 steps, or goals, in place to support mothers breastfeed their infants after delivery and before discharge. The Texas Breastfeeding Initiative has a goal of having 75 percent of mothers exclusively breastfeeding when they are discharged, and the practices in place will help promote longer durations of breastfeeding after leaving the hospital.
The maternity staffs at Texas Ten-designated facilities receive training within the first six months of employment and annual updates. The staff is also available to assist mothers after they go home with their infants.
